Keran Bala Devan - Malaysia
Keren Bala Devan is a stand up comedian who loves to share his unique views about everything wrong with modern culture. Usually by complaining. A lot. His specific brand of comedy stems from years of observing how ridiculous things that are part of everyday life have come to be. From strange modern cultural habits to the annoying behaviour of the general populace, he always find something to say and rant about. Some of the things that rub him the wrong way are:
The General Population
As part of the next generation of comics in Malaysia, his almost three year journey has lead to him headlining various venues around Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya, opening for International comic Paul Ogata, and performing in shows with Harith Iskander as well as at the International Comedy Fringe Festival in Singapore.
He is now one of the new producers for One Mic Stand, Malaysia’s premiere comedy open-mic venue and can be seen frequently performing there and at The Crackhouse Comedy Club in Kuala Lumpur.
Kavin Jay - Malaysia
PETALING JAYA: Malaysian comedian Kavin Jay is no stranger to the Malaysian comedy scene and is well known among fans for his “complaints”.
The 38-year-old comedian, whose full name is Kavin Jayaram, is born and bred in Kuala Lumpur and has been doing comedy since 2006.
Despite his vast experience, Kavin was still surprised at landing his own show on digital streaming service Netflix.
It was “unexpected”, he said about the show called “Everybody Calm Down” which is set to air on Feb 2.
“Netflix was looking for comedians to be on their platform, and as Malaysian comedy icon Harith Iskander was recording his Netflix special “I Told You So” (set to be released on Jan 19), Harith asked me to warm up the audience before he comes out.
“The Netflix people saw what I do, and as they say, the rest is history,” he told FMT.
The one-hour show, which was recorded in Singapore, will feature the stand-up comedy routine which he has honed over the past 12 years in local clubs.
“Everybody Calm Down is politically incorrect, intense and shows my warped sense of love and life,” Kavin said.
An introduction for the show describes him as “being Malaysian Indian, Kavin Jay has lived life with a severe disability and was always destined to be angry and easily irritated. He was voted Malaysia’s grumpiest comedian because he complains about everything so that you don’t have to. You’re welcome!”
Since his first gig in 2006, Kavin has performed extensively locally and over the past five years has also taken his show on the road to Singapore, Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong and Vietnam.
“Honestly, I did not expect this, but I still plan to do tours abroad and I’m currently working on my new show which will hopefully be ready this year.
“The comedy scene in Malaysia is still in its infancy, all of the comics in Malaysia are working very hard to build a thriving industry here in Malaysia while bigger names like Harith Iskander and Joanne Kam are really bringing the Malaysian brand of comedy to the world.”
Kavin said his comedy heroes were Robin Williams, Eddie Izzard, Rhod Gilbert and Harith Iskander.
Deepak Chandran - India
Deepak Chandran's rise in the world of stand-up comedy has been nothing short of spectacular. A regular headliner now across South & South East Asia, as well as being an established host at Comedy Masala Singapore, Deepak will showcase his new show "Non-Responsible Indian", which he plans to tour with in late 2017! And where else to catch his new show, but at Comedy Masala! Deepak is also an avid cook, but unfortunately can only make 3 variations of Paneer, before starting over again (with Paneer).
